PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising is a type of internet marketing where businesses pay money each time one of their ads is clicked. With PPC, the payment involves a fee to the advertiser (or website) where the ad is placed, each time the ad is clicked.

Referral Example:

  • Website # 1 wants to generate more traffic to their site.
  • Website # 2 wants to earn more revenue by placing ads for other businesses on their site.
  • Website # 1 places an ad on Website # 2.
  • Each time a visitor to website # 2 clicks the ad placed by Website # 1, Website # 2 earns a referral fee.
  • This referral fee is a way of ‘pre-purchasing’ qualified leads and traffic to Website # 1.

The above example is a scaled down refferal based version of Pay Per Click that is commonly used for smaller businesses.  Pay-Per-Click is completely scalable with your budget and you will see most revenue being generated through ads that are placed alongside search engine results.  These ads can can also appear in sidebar next to search engine results depending on how the ad campaign has been configured.

Each time someone clicks on one of these ads, the business must pay the search engine a small fee, we’ll use $2.00 as an example.  It may seem like a lot of money if you begin to add up how many times a visitor may click on the sponsored link, however, if 1 out of every 100 clicks leads to a sale of a product that costs $2,000.00, the ROI is obvious.

It Starts at Home

The first step to a successful Pay Per Click campaign begins with looking at how your business currently attracts its customers. If you don’t already have a proven method to generating leads and converting them into sales, Pay Per Click advertising may not be for you yet, PPC only amplifies your current situation. The next step is to create original ads (and ad groups) that will tie back to the keywords.  Once the keywords and ads have been researched and developed, the next step is to monitor, optimize and iterate.  We’ll use Google Ads as our example since it is the most popular and widely used PPC tool currently on the market.

In order to see ads for certain keywords in the Google index, they must be submitted to the Google ads platform.  This process involves ‘bidding on’ certain keywords or combinations of words that will be included and show up at the top of the search engine results with an ‘ad’ symbol next to them.  Results are based on the quality of the keywords, the relevance to the search query, and the cost of keyword ‘bids’.  Google Ads uses an equation they call Ad Rank to calculate which ads will appear in the search results.

Here is how the equation works:

Multiply CPC (cost per click, which the highest amount the advertiser will bid or pay for the keywords) by Quality Score (a ranking calculated by Google based on site quality, click through rate, and relevance to the search query terms).

CPC x QS = ranking

This formula or equation allows each advertiser to spend as much or as little as they wish on the ad campaign.  The key to ‘winning’ the ad game isn’t really how much an advertiser is willing to bid or pay for keywords, it’s more about the words used and how the pages are built.

Google Ads bases the Quality Score on these two key factors:

  1. Keyword Relevance – relevant keywords and groups, and high quality ad text
  2. Quality of Landing Page – landing pages that are optimized and maximized to draw in visitors with relevant content that is specific to the search queries entered
